- InfiniBand and OpenFabrics – the Green Performing Interconnect for HPC
- Industry Analysts state that InfiniBand (IB) with OpenFabrics software now accounts for some 60% of new installations of HPC systems/clusters worldwide. We will describe how InfiniBand fabrics at 40 Gigabits per second (QDR) per port have now superceded 20 Gigabit or DDR as the majority choice. Adapters for compute and storage nodes are now available with latencies order 1 microsecond including certain on-board MPI collectives. We will provide an update on the OpenFabrics RDMA software stack for Linux (OFED) for SRP, iSCSI, NFS, Lustre and GPFS for storage access including booting and all cluster fabric needs. Indeed the first Top 100 systems without Ethernet for some of these functions are now deployed. In addition to IB, OFED 1.5, scheduled for year end release, supports RDMA over Ethernet as a transport known as iWARP and delivers latencies that are a fraction of legacy Ethernet at wire speed of 10 gigabits.
